While Howard never got comfortable running the pick-and-roll with Steve Nash in Los Angeles, he could in this capacity with either Harden or Lin, as the two are adept at running the offense off of the pick-and-roll.
Asik would seem to be an odd frontcourt partner for Howard, at least offensively. Neither Asik nor Howard has much range on his shot, leaving the middle of the court fairly congested. This could potentially clog the lane, making it more difficult for Harden and Lin to penetrate and get to the basket. However, on the other end of the court, the two would form one of the most dominant last lines of defense in the NBA. While Howard appears to have lost a little of his elite athleticism, he is still one of the best shot blockers and rebounders in the league, and could be even better in 2013-2014 as he continues to recover from back surgery last summer. While Asik doesn’t put up the gaudy block numbers that Howard does, he is a terrific defensive player in his own right, and is seemingly always in the right place. He is also great in the pick and roll, and this agility should serve him well if asked to guard power forwards further away from the basket.
Houston surprised a lot of people by making the playoffs this year, and appears to be a team on the rise, especially after the breakout performance by Harden this year. It is no guarantee that Howard will leave Los Angeles, as the Lakers can offer him more money than any other team, as well as the chance to play for one of the league’s marquee franchises. However, his interest in Houston is real, and if the Rockets are able to snare his signature, his arrival would instantly make them a championship contender in the Western Conference.
